[From Spring 2001]
The 3rd annual International Migratory Bird Day festival will be held at Eastern Shore of Virginia National Wildlife Refuge on Saturday, May 12, 2001. This celebration will be one of many events around the country to highlight migratory birds. Our festival will focus on those migrants that return to Virginia's Eastern Shore and the Delmarva Peninsula.
On this day, many field trips and activities are planned for the refuge and the surrounding area. Included are Fisherman Island National Wildlife Refuge field trips, sail boat and kayak excursions, Eyre Hall bird walks, and Maplewood Gardens bird and flower tours. Many other field trips and workshops are planned for this celebration of migratory birds. The Coastal Virginia Wildlife Observatory will be at the refuge collecting data for the spring migration study and will be banding songbirds throughout the day.
The refuge Visitor Center will be the central location for a variety of children and family activities. There will be games and crafts for the children, including the very popular wildlife buttons when the children can design and build bluebird boxes and take them home to attract their own cavity nesters. Salisbury Zoological Park will be here from 10 am to 3 pm on this day with many of their educational animals, including owls.
So come and join in this celebration of migratory birds on Saturday, May 12 and welcome back . those spectacular migrants. For more information, please call the refuge at (757) 331-2760 or check our web site http://easternshore.fws.gov
