IMBD Celebration - CNWR

Spring comes early to Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. Planning for the 7th Annual International Migratory Bird Celebration (May 11-13) began in early January. Already several speakers and artists have committed to attending the event. Jim Clark, nationally renowned nature photographer, author and writer, will present a musical slide program about discovering a sense of place in our exploration of nature entitled "Mason Jars and Memories."

Recently retired Chief of Park Interpretation at Assateague Island National Seashore, Larry Points will present "The Birds, Beaches, and Wild Ponies of Assateague Island," a slide program featuring unique photos highlighted in his three children's books. Larry will also be signing books for those dedicated fans. Bill Silliker, wildlife photographer sponsored by Fuji Film Professional, tells how he photographed eagles in the four corners of North America and offers tips on ethical methods for those who seek to photograph these birds. Mr. Silliker will also be autographing copies of his book, Just Eagles.

Local waterfowl carver, Reggie Birch, will share his years of experience in "The Art of Decoys." Learn first-hand what it takes to create a work of art and how the changes in environmental laws and hunting technology have given a new meaning to decoys. A special program on this year's International Migratory Bird Day theme, shade-grown coffee and its benefits for migratory birds, will be presented by National Park Service Naturalist, Tracy Ammerman. Now coffee drinkers can help conserve migratory birds through their purchasing power - a must see for us caffeine addicts.

Suzanne Tate, famous author of those lovable children's books, will have a Storytelling Time and book signing at the celebration - a great time for the young and young-at-heart. In addition to these presentations, the celebration will feature a wildlife art exhibit, Assateague Island Lighthouse tours, interpretive walks, a 5K Fun Run/Walk, family activities, and much, much more. Fun and educational, the celebration offers something for everyone!
