Refuge Hosts Junior Duck Stamp Competition

"Conservation through the arts. That is what this entire program is all about," said Outdoor Recreation Planner Laurel Faith, Virginia State Coordinator. "This art competition is designed to reach new and diverse audiences who are not necessarily interested in wildlife conservation, but love the beauty and grace of North American waterfowl."

Faith, who took over as state coordinator for the 2005 competition, has been working diligently since the fall of 2004 to host a stellar competition, hosted by Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. "Yvonne' Schultz, Outdoor Recreation Planner at Eastern Shore of Virginia National Wildlife Refuge, provided me with sound advice and guidance," said Faith. According to Faith, Schultz served as Virginia State Coordinator for many years when she worked as an ORP at Mason Neck National Wildlife Refuge in Northern Virginia and at Eastern Shore of Virginia National Wildlife Refuge. Additionally, Faith was quick to laud the Washington, D.C. Federal Duck Stamp Office for help, even noting that a staff member from that office traveled to the refuge to observe the judging, which took place on March 31st.

"I have been inspired by the multitude and diversity of this year's submissions," said Faith. "I could hardly wait to notify the winner."
