[From Spring 2006]
Eastern Shore of Virginia NWR, south of Cape Charles, needs volunteers to help keep their visitor center open. Help is needed immediately to cover until interns start for the summer and then will be needed occasionally during the summer. When summer interns leave, our need for volunteers will again jump. Contact Outdoor Recreation Planner Yvonne Schultz at yvonne-schultz@fws.gov for more information.
The main role for volunteers will be to welcome visitors, offer information about the area, conduct sales in a small but choice bookstore, and show videos on request. The Eastern Shore of Virginia NWR visitor center is a beautiful facility located south of Cape Charles, just before the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel toll booths and receives many visitors just happening on the refuge during their travels along the peninsula. They are a wonderful target audience for us to reach about refuges and the wonders of the eastern shore.
We ask that volunteers be interested in helping visitors and be easy going in making contacts, have general knowledge about the shore, and can work a minimum of four hour shifts. You don't have to be an expert on wildlife, but any special skills are welcome.
The Eastern Shore of Virginia NWR visitor center is normally open seven days a week from 9 AM until 4 PM at this time of year, but due to a shortage of staff and volunteers is temporarily only open Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 9 AM until 4 PM and on Mondays and Thursdays from 10 AM until 2 PM. It is closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
If you would like to help people learn about the refuge and the shore, you could be just the person we need. Contact us at 757-331-2760 or email us for more information.
