CNHA Honors Featured Artist, Julie Zickefoose

Ever wonder about the title of our newsletter? In 1987 when the CNHA was created, it was the very same time a little shorebird was listed as a threatened species. The Piping Plover was adopted as our symbol and newsletter title. As we celebrate the one year anniversary of The Piping Plover's new format, I'd like to introduce to you a person who has become very important to this new look.

Julie Zickefoose is a freelance artist, writer and naturalist who is devoted to the study, conservation and appreciation of birds. Educated at Harvard University in biology and drawing, she worked as a field biologist for The Nature Conservancy for six years before turning to art as a full-time career. During that time, she created the Least Tern/Piping Plover Recovery Program to answer an urgent need for study and management of these threatened species in Connecticut.

Drawing and painting directly from living birds, in the tradition of Fuertes, Sutton and Ennion, is Julie's specialty. A spotting scope and binoculars allow her to draw birds at their ease, in every possible position. Landscapes and habitats are painted on location. It is this field experience which gives life, accuracy and feeling to her work. As a licensed wildlife rehabilitator, she is surrounded by subjects for sketches and paintings.

Her drawings have been published in The New Yorker, and she has painted, drawn and written for Bird Watcher's Digest, American Birds, Bird Observer, and numerous publications for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Paintings from life are featured in Backyard Birds (HarperCollins, 1993) and drawings in The Birds of Northeast North America, a ten year project of the Academy of Natural Sciences. Enjoying Bluebirds More (Bird Watcher's Digest Press) is a new booklet written and illustrated by Julie. "I've always been drawn to species in need, bluebirds and piping plovers both benefit enormously from thoughtful human intervention, and I try to encourage others to take caring action on their behalf."

The CNHA will be carrying Birds Over Troubled Forests illustrated by Julie and postcards featuring her Piping Plover. The CNHA would also like to express its gratitude to Julie for the use of her artwork.
