[From Spring 1995]
On May 13, 1995, Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge will celebrate International Migratory Bird Day with a variety of walks, programs, demonstrations and workshops. A wildlife art show and tours of the Assateague Lighthouse will also be available. Join refuge staff and volunteers in learning how to identify the spring migrants, get tips on wildlife photography, explore the different habitats on the refuge and learn how they are managed.
Sixty-five million Americans enjoy bird watching and bird feeding. Yet, many birders are not aware of the threats that habitat loss and lack of funding for migratory bird conservation pose to populations of their favorite species. The numbers of wood thrushes, cerulean warblers, and western bluebirds, just to name a few, are declining at rates of 2-4% each year. International Migratory Bird Day was established to promote awareness of the threats to bird populations and to gather support for conservation efforts. Come and learn what you can do to help migratory birds.
