Refuge Writes Interpretive Plan

Chincoteague Refuge has decided to pursue the development of an Interpretive Plan which will take refuge visitor services into the next century. An interpretive plan is a document that analyzes the refuge’s need for interpretive media such as a visitor center, wayside exhibits, museum exhibits, publications, audio-visual programs, education programs, outreach programs, and outlines a general media "prescription" for the refuge.

Two teams will be responsible for completion of the plan, the core team of five to seven individuals is meeting on a regular basis, weekly or bi-weekly, to assemble the information needed by the second or third planning team. This second team meets less often, reviews information, provides input and makes decisions based on the data gathered by the core team. The National Park Service, town of Chincoteague, state, county, educational institutions, conservation organizations, etc., are represented on the teams.

Implementation of the plan will start this fall. Anyone interested in reviewing a draft of the plan may be put on a mailing list by calling the refuge at (804) 336-6122.

Supervisory Outdoor Recreation Planner
