Chincoteague Refuge Volunteer Activities

New volunteer projects, training opportunities, and field trips were unveiled at the first Volunteer Open House on February 22nd at the Refuge Visitor Contact Station. Volunteers were able to learn about new projects such as adopting nest boxes, helping with vegetation studies, leading school groups, coordinating an Adopt-a-Trail program, and organizing historic photos. Sign up sheets for training in spring bird identification, management updates, and visitor contact station updates were available, as well as registration for a volunteer trip to Patuxent National Wildlife Research Center. New volunteer applications were received from a number of individuals as a result of the open house. Refreshments for the event were provided by the Chincoteague Natural History Association.

The CNHA also provided funds for a Volunteer Recognition Dinner on Saturday, January 21st. Almost 40 people attended the event to thank the volunteer staff for their work in 1994. The following people received special recognition for their efforts in 1994:
