[From Spring 1997]
The Public Use staff is currently coordinating the spring and summer program schedule for the 1997 season. This spring, Chincoteague refuge and the National Park Service will be offering two environmental education programs: "Wildlife: Endangered and Threatened Species Exploration" and "Wetlands". The National Park Service will also be offering "Salt Marsh Adventure" and "Shore Searching". Numerous schools from the Eastern Shore and surrounding states have already signed up to participate.
Other activities at Chincoteague refuge include tree planting for Arbor Day and Earth Day to help repair southern pine beetle damage. The International Migratory Bird Celebration will be held May 10 and 11. Activities at the celebration include: a 5K race, children's art contest, shorebird and raptor identification workshops, and a photography workshop.
The public use staff is also planning to offer bird walks, interpretive hikes on refuge management (including endangered species), and a freshwater marsh program this summer. Four public use interns (2 spring and 2 summer) will help lead programs and conduct interpretive activities.
If you would like further information about events at Chincoteague refuge, please contact Angela Tracy or Jennifer Lundin at 336-6122.
