For those of you who frequent the Internet you may want to check out the Fish and Wildlife Service Home Page at http://www.fws.gov for a plethora of up-to-date information on the work of the Service and the Refuge System. For more specific information on Refuges go to http://www.refugenet.com . This web site will tell you about refuge-sponsored special events on all the refuges in the system or check out a new site at http://www.gorp.com/refrep/ . This site includes selected articles from past issues of the Refuge Reporter which is a publication devoted exclusively to news and commentary about the National Wildlife Refuge System.
One Web Site which I think is really worth your while if you're interested in birds is The Virtual Birder at http://www.virtualbirder.com/vbirder/ . The February edition includes On Location Focus on Waterfowl at Sachuest Point and Chincoteague NWR and On Location Hawk Watch at Hawk Mountain and Cape May. You can also enjoy The Gallery which features viewing better quality images of waterfowl and other birds; Hot Links to other Web Sites on wild birds and birding; a list of Rare Bird Alerts; bird information; Rants and Raves where you provide feedback, ideas, info, etc.; and a sneak preview for March: Florida's Gulf Coast.
I only had time to check out The Virtual Tour of Chincoteague NWR. Besides learning about the refuge you are able to test your bird identification skills by virtually traveling around the refuge and using a scope or binoculars to identify birds that are in or adjacent to the refuge impoundments or off the ocean shore. If you just want to learn about the birds you're viewing, you can do that too. The Tour is great for the novice or experienced birder. Check it out! I think you'll have some fun and learn something new at the same time.
