[From Summer 2000]
Summer is upon us again, and yes, once again, public use staff are busily preparing an array of interpretive programs for refuge visitors. The official start date of the summer interpretive season began June 12, following a two-week training period and coinciding with the end of the school year.
This season, and back by popular demand are the "Feathered Whatsits" and "Life Behind The Dune" walks. In addition to these programs, public use staff will also be offering interpretive hikes on the Woodland Trail, Freshwater Marsh Trail and Wildlife Loop which include "Assateague Nightlife," a special evening look at life on the refuge after dark. Special walks including programs on telemetry demonstration and bird banding will also be featured.
Refuge staff will also be offering the popular "Refuge Academy" on June 19th through the 23rd for youths ages 7 to 11. The success of this environmental education day camp cannot be overstated! In fact, by January 2000, Supervisory Outdoor Recreation Planner Angela V. Tracy had already signed up several eager students. "Word about this terrific program is really getting around," said Tracy. "I've had more folks call me personally to register their children as well as locate me during celebrations to sign their kids up!" And it is no wonder why. The week is packed with a variety of activities and hands-on projects. Space is limited and preregistration is a must!
