Wildlife Collisions

Have you noticed something new along a stretch of Route 175 just east of the NASA visitor's center? The Virginia department of Transportation (VDOT) has installed "Swareflex" reflectors along a small section of the highway leading to/from Chincoteague.

A study is being conducted to determine how effective the reflectors are in reducing wildlife collisions with vehicles, especially those involving white-tailed deer. VDOT will compare the number of road-kills near the reflectors to areas where there are no reflectors. Road-kills of any animal should be reported to Jason Wood, U.S. Department of Agriculture/Wildlife Services representative at NASA Wallops, by phoning Jason at 824-1254. He will document the incident and is collecting data that will be reported to VDOT for their study.
