[From Summer 2004]
On May 8th and 9th, the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge attracted
hundreds of visitors from across the notion and around the world to the annual
International Migratory Bird Celebration.
Family fun included relay races, exhibits by artists and craftspeople, face
painting and activities for children. The smell of popcorn lured children
proudly clutching wooden birds they had painted and sporting brightly painted
birds, turtles, flowers and even snakes on their faces.
The Chincoteague Natural History Association's (CNHA) table, staffed by
volunteers, displayed many of the items available at the gift shop. Brochures
were popular with visitors who expressed interest in the work of CNHA, and
members had the opportunity to discuss the mission and accomplishments of the
organization with visitors and local residents. Many who attended inquired about
our wildlife refuge tours. The lighthouse was open for the weekend and many who
took advantage of visiting it were delighted with the experience.
All in all, the cooperation between refuge staff, artists, organizations and
volunteers combined to provide entertainment and education to those who visited
Assateague Island over the Mother's Day Weekend.
