[From Summer 1997]
Susan Rice, the Deputy Refuge Manager at the Caribbean Islands NWR complex in Puerto Rico, will assume the Refuge Manager duties at the Eastern Shore of Virginia NWR in early July. The 40-year old native of Rochester, NY, has been with the Fish and Wildlife Service since 1979, when she started with the Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge near Syracuse, NY.
After an assignment in the Washington Office, she was an assistant manager at two Texas Refuges - the Aransas NWR in Austwell and the Laguna Atascosa NWR in Rio Hondo. She has been stationed at the Caribbean Islands refuge for the past nine years.
Ms. Rice received a BS Degree in nature interpretation from West Virginia University and a Master's Degree in Biology from the University of Puerto Rico. She brings to her new position extensive experience in outreach, environmental education, and wildlife management.
She is looking forward to building on the successful partnerships fostered by former manager, Sherman Stairs, and expanding the opportunities for environmental education and wildlife-dependent recreation on the Eastern Shore of VA NWR. She also will be working diligently in protecting additional critical habitat on the lower Eastern Shore.
