[From Fall 2002]
This past August saw Onancock Harbor bustling with activity. The annual Harborfest was held on the 16th and 17th in this picturesque town. Numerous food vendors and game booths were set up on the pier, with proceeds going to charity. There were many interesting things to see and do for the whole family. Besides the kayak races, there was a cardboard boat race as well as a rubber duck race.
The Eastern Shore of Virginia National Wildlife Refuge, for the fifth year in a row, set up a booth to entertain as well as inform. Children and adults alike took part in making buttons with their own creative designs, which was a great way to involve the children as the parents' read and asked questions about the mission and activities of the refuge.
Children were encouraged to decorate a circle with, the refuge logo, using animal and plant stamps. The circles were then made into buttons. Adults also joined the fun, making buttons for their children as well as for themselves. Informational pamphlets about the refuge and its goals were also handed out. This was an effective way to increase awareness about the issues facing wildlife in the area as well as migrating species.
