Eastern Shore of Virginia National Wildlife Refuge, Recreation/Education Internship or Volunteers: We Need Interns

Qualifications: A good background in wildlife biology or other natural resource areas, and experience working with the public or good people skills. Prefer juniors and seniors in college or recent graduates. Great for getting started in the system or for a resume. Spring (Mar-May), Summer (Jun-Aug), Fall (Sep-Nov) and Winter (Dec-Feb) positions available.

Duties & Responsibilities: Internships provide valuable hands-on experience in the many activities of a Refuge, such as public use services, environmental education, and biology. Duties and approximate time allocations include: 50% staffing the visitor center and bookstore; 20% outreach program - materials, displays, programs; 20% maintenance; and 10% administrative and biological support.

Days/Hours: 12 week position, 40 hours/week include weekends & holidays.

Expense Allocation: $120 per week with free onsite housing

About the Refuge
Eastern Shore of Virginia National Wildlife Refuge, operated by the U.S. Fish and, Wildlife Service, is located at the bottom of the Delmarva (Delaware-Maryland-Virginia) Peninsula just north of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. The refuge is a major stopover area for migratory songbirds and raptors in the spring and fall. The refuge has wildlife observation areas, walking trails, and a visitor center.

Spring - Fisherman Island interpretive tours, International Migratory Bird Day, school outreach
Summer - nesting shorebirds and pelicans, outreach to tourists, butterflies
Fall - Birding Festival, deer hunt, Fisherman Island tours, bird and monarch butterfly migration
Winter - Fisherman Island interpretive tours, wintering woodcock, school outreach
