[From Fall 1996]

Special Tour Set for CNHA Members

A special tour of Fisherman Island National Wildlife Refuge has been arranged exclusively for Chincoteague Natural History Association members. The 1,000 acre Fisherman Island is the southern-most barrier island adjacent to the Delmarva Peninsula coast, and is located by the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay.

Literally millions of passerines, such as bluebirds, meadow larks and tree swallows stage on the island during fall migration. Migrating raptors, including sharp-shinned, Cooper's and red-tailed hawks also stage on the island. In addition to the fall and spring migrations, a wide variety of waterfowl can be observed during the winter and early spring, as well as local residents like the peregrine falcon and bald eagle.

Here are some particulars about the tour:

*Walking tour time is 3 hours and covers 4-5 miles.
*There are NO BATHROOMS.
*Tour is free, but you have to go two miles through the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel toll booth to get to Fisherman Island. There is a $10 per car toll. Car-pooling is required, since there is parking for only ten cars, and car-pooling shares the toll.
*Youth must be at least 10 years of age.
*If there is inclement weather, tour will be canceled.
