[From Fall 1997]
The Eastern Shore Birding Festival on October 3, 4 & 5 kicked off another season of birding tours to Fisherman Island National Wildlife Refuge. All the young terns, pelicans, oyster-catchers, egrets and herons have fledged, but bird activity on the island is far from over.
Birders who schedule tours during the fall migration will see raptors as well as neotropical species that rest and feed on the refuge before continuing their trek south to Central and South America. Birders who schedule tours over the winter and early spring usually see a few hawks and a wide variety of waterfowl. Even harlequin ducks are occasionally spotted.
The tours will be conducted each Saturday, with the last program scheduled for March 14, 1998. The first Saturday of each month is reserved for individuals and the other Saturdays are reserved for group tours. A minimum of ten people must be registered in order to conduct the tour. Also, the maximum that can sign up for tours is thirty. The tours cover a distance of about four miles, start at 9 a.m., and end around 12:30 p.m.
