On July 31, the United States Senate confirmed Jamie Rappaport Clark as Director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Ms. Clark, a career civil servant, has been an employee of the Service for the past eight years.
Since 1984 she has served as the Service's Assistant Director for Ecological Services. In this position, she has been responsible for implementation of the Endangered Species Act nationwide and has overseen habitat restoration programs, wetlands protection, contaminants damage restoration programs, and other Service initiatives involving environmental protection.
During her career with the Service, she has served as Chief of the Division of Endangered Species and as Deputy Assistant, Regional Director in the Southwest Region and as senior staff biologist. Before joining the Fish and Wildlife Service, she served as Fish and Wildlife Administrator for the Department of the Army from 1988 to 1989, and Natural/Cultural Resources Coordinator for the National Guard Bureau from 1984 to 1988. She also has worked as a research biologist for the Army Medical Research Institute and a wildlife biologist for the National Institute for Urban Wildlife.
Ms. Clark received a BS in Wildlife Biology from Towson State University and a Master of Science in Wildlife Ecology from the University of Maryland. She and her husband, Jim, who is Chief, Branch of Training for the Fish and Wildlife Service, currently reside in Leesburg, Virginia.
Jamie and Jim are frequent visitors to Chincoteague NWR and the Eastern Shore. They visit the refuges for rest, recreation, and photography.
