[From Winter 2001]
Winter wanderers, both feathered and human enjoy the island's winter beauty and bounty. Human visitors not only view the spectacle of feathered travelers during their migration, but also the beauty of a wind and wave sculptured beach. Winter storms bring many natural treasures for the beachcomber.
Over the winter holidays, Martin Luther King Jr. and Presidents' Day, guided walks will entice visitors out of hibernation with various guided programs. On Saturday, January 12, and Saturday, February 16, at 10 AM meet the winter inhabitants and discover the management of the habitat along the Freshwater Marsh Trail. Participants need to meet at the Chincoteague Refuge Visitor Center.
At 2 PM on these special Saturdays, meet at the Lighthouse Trail parking lot to time trawl and explore the island's rich cultural history. On Groundhog's Day, February 2, visitors will look back at winter and look forward to spring, through a walk in the "wildlife only" White Hills area. Brave the winter weather and learn how wildlife adapt to the season's harsh conditions. For more information, call me at 757-336-6122.
