Volunteers Recognized

Volunteers contributed over 12,000 hours to the refuge in the past year. Their diverse duties included staffing the Visitor Center, organizing slides, counting shorebirds, planting beach grass, building brochure boxes, contributing artwork... the list goes on. To thank them for their hard work, the refuge staff used money donated by the Chincoteague Natural History Association to provide a feast (cooked by refuge staff) for 19 volunteers and their guests.

The contribution of each and every volunteer is essential to the smooth operation of the refuge; however, some deserve to be specially noted. Bob and Ruth Hallett were recognized as "Volunteers of the Year" for their work not only in the Visitor Center, but in creating the 50th Anniversary banner, patrolling trails, building brochure boxes, and the many projects they initiated. Cheryl Hamilton received a "Special Project Award" for her work monitoring piping plovers, conducting vegetation transacts and studying waterfowl disturbance. Cheryl has been volunteering full time since January 1993. All of the time, talent, and skills of our diverse volunteer staff make an enormous contribution to the refuge and is greatly appreciated.

(Ed. note: Bob and Ruth Hallett also contribute other important volunteer hours as CNHA board members.)
