[From Winter 1994-95]
During the 1994 fiscal year, volunteers contributed over 8,000 hours to the Chincoteague Refuge. Many of these Volunteers were local residents who came to the refuse on a regular basis to staff the visitor center, conduct shorebird surveys, or perform other regularly scheduled activities. The refuse also attracts volunteers from across the country who are willing to donate their time and talents to refuge projects but require a place to live. We rely on these volunteers to provide programs, monitor and survey wildlife, and conduct research.
Volunteers are currently housed at the old lighthouse keepers house, which has room for six people. During the summer the home is quickly filled with seasonal law enforcement staff, Student Conservation Assistants, interns, and co-op students.
Two trailers were generously donated to the refuge in 1988, but are now uninhabitable due to structural problems. We are in desperate need of additional housing for the summer of 1995.
If you know of anyone who might be willing to donate a livable trailer to the refuge for volunteer housing, please contact Jim Kenyon at (804) 336-6122. the contribution would be tax-deductible and greatly appreciated.
