[From Winter 1995-96]
Manager Sherman Stairs and his staff at the Eastern Shore of Virginia NWR will host the 1996 Eastern Shore District Envirothon this spring. Jim Kenyon, Outdoor Recreation Planner, will serve as wildlife specialist and site coordinator, with assistance from the interpretive staff of Chincoteague NWR.
The Envirothon is a nation-wide environmental competition for high school students sponsored by soil and water conservation districts. The local event is coordinated by the Eastern Shore Soil and Water Conservation District. Teams of students from Shore high schools receive training and are tested in the areas of soils, aquatics, forestry and wildlife, in addition to a current topic which changes each year. This year's topic is Land Use - Greenways. The winning team will advance to regional and state competition. Last year an Eastern Shore team won the Virginia state competition and went to the National Envirothon in Idaho.
In addition to Jim Kenyon, the other specialists for the 1996 Envirothon are Tracy Ammerman, NPS Assateague Island National Seashore, aquatics: Walt Pond, Virginia Department of Forestry, forestry; Susan Demas, Eastern Shore Soil and Water Conservation District, soils; and Paige Mayo, Accomack-Northampton Planning District Commission, greenways. A training session will be held on March 6, with the competition taking place on April 3.
Both refuges have been involved with the Envirothon, as wildlife specialists, since its local inception in 1993 . The 1994 competition was held at Chincoteague NWR.
