Volunteer Update

In October, a volunteer banquet was held to recognize all of the volunteers at the refuge. There was a good turn-out for the covered dish dinner.

Tom Ratliff and Shuli Tor were recognized as Volunteers of the Year. They have both been a valuable asset to the refuge. Congratulations! [See "Meet the Volunteers" in the spring 1996 issue for more on Tom Ratliff and Shuli Tor.] The trip to Blackwater NWR has been re-scheduled for January. A mailing will go out to volunteers letting them know when it will take place. In February, there will be an Open House at the Visitor Contact Station. Refuge staff, current volunteers and new recruits will be invited to come. The date and time will be announced soon.

In the spring, a trip to Fisherman's Island will be scheduled, hopefully in conjunction with the spring migration of shorebirds. In April. the refuge will celebrate National Volunteer Week with a banquet.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Chincoteague Natural History Association for their continued support of the volunteer program. They provide much needed funds that enable refuge staff to provide volunteers with field trips and social functions as well as supplies required to keep the program operating smoothly.

Pat Esmond,
Supervisor, ORP Staff
