Location: Woodland Trail

These houses are built for an endangered species, the Delmarva Peninsula fox squirrel (Sciurus niger cenereus). The houses are attached to trees (usually loblolly pines) about ten feet above the ground. The numbered side panel, hinged to the back of the house and secured by a hook on the front, can be opened for cleaning.

The Delmarva fox squirrel, somewhat larger than the gray squirrel and with a bushier tail, lives among the loblolly pines on the refuge.
